Why Solo Travel Isn’t Just for the Brave Anymore

There was a time when solo travel felt like something only for the ultra-adventurous: the Eat Pray Love types, the off-grid wanderers, or those with a sudden urge to "find themselves." But things have changed enormously.

Today, solo travel isn’t a niche. Nor is it a phase. It’s mainstream. If you are feeling the urge to pack a case, and just go—you’re not alone.

In fact, you’re part of a growing global movement.

The Phenomenal Rise of Solo Travel.

According to recent travel industry reports, solo travel made up nearly £358 billion in spending in 2024, and it’s not slowing down. It’s projected to hit over £750 billion by 2030. Is it a trend? No that’s a full-blown cultural shift.

More than a third of travellers today are choosing to go it alone. Not because they have no one to go with—but because they want to.

And who’s leading this change? Women, by a wide margin. In some surveys, up to 84% of solo travel bookings are by women, many of whom say they’re doing it for wellness, clarity, and freedom.

Why Go Solo?

Solo travellers are chasing something different: flexibility, freedom, and something refreshingly personal.

There’s no compromise when you travel alone. You wake up when you want. You go where you want. You can hike a mountain at sunrise or spend three hours people-watching at a café—no explanations are needed.

But it’s not just about logistics. It’s about growth. Over 85% of solo travellers say their journeys helped improve their mental well-being. Many describe it as a chance to reset, recharge, and rediscover what truly makes them feel alive.

Are You On the Fence?

Maybe you’ve been thinking about it for a while. Maybe your friends keep flaking, or your diary never quite matches with theirs. Maybe part of you just wants to prove you can?

But then comes the doubt: Is it safe? Will I get lonely? What if I hate it?

They are totally valid questions—and you’re not alone in questioning yourself. The truth is most solo travellers start with the same nerves. What happens though is, the more they do it, the more confident they become. Statistics show that after just a few trips, concerns about safety and loneliness drop significantly.

So my advice is, start small.. Try a solo weekend away. Pick a place you’ve always wanted to see—close to home if you are really nervous—and take that first step. You don’t need to go “find yourself.” Just find your first place, and see what unfolds.

If You Are Already Solo Travelling.

Why have you not joined my Jet Set to Glow Solo facebook group? Only joking!

If you are already solo travelling that is fantastic, you are part of a new revolution in how we experience the world. You're proving that solo doesn’t mean alone—it means in charge. You’re setting trends without trying to, and your stories are inspiring people who need that little nudge.

So share your tips. Keep posting those sunrise pics. Remember those moments that make you smile, cry, or breathe a little deeper, share them with us. You never know who you’re encouraging to take that leap.

The World Is Ready for You, Be Ready For the World

Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned nomad, one thing is clear: the world is more open to solo travellers than ever before. Travel companies are catching on. Hotels are starting to offer solo travel packages, group day trips for independent travellers, and more communal experiences designed for people just like you. Some are even eliminating the dreaded “single supplement” charges (finally!).

My Final Thought

If you’ve been waiting for the “right” moment to travel solo, this is it. The only permission you need is your own.

Solo travel isn’t about being alone—it’s about being free. Free to explore, to grow, to rest, to wander. And trust me: once you go, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

Your seat is waiting
